the module design
ConeTec’s Thermal CPTu Module offers a groundbreaking solution for measuring soil thermal conductivity in-situ. This patented technology replaces the need for expensive, time-consuming lab tests and reduces the disturbance evident in traditional soil sampling methods.
The Thermal CPTu module design was inspired by the simplicity of the commonly used thermal needle probe method for determining thermal conductivity. This novel instrument combines the concept of a linear heat source embedded in the side of a CPT module. A copper rod in the module is used to heat the soil, then records the thermal dissipation curve during the test. From this curve, the soil thermal conductivity is calculated.
how it works
- Push to desired test depth using CPT or direct push equipment
- Allow for probe to come to temperature equilibrium with the soil (15-min)
- Perform 5-min heating followed by thermal conductivity measurement
- Advance to next test depth
benefits
- FAST: 5-min in situ test + 15-min equilibrium time = 20 min per test interval
- REPEATABLE: Standard procedure, excellent contact with soil, operator independent
- RESULTS: Automated reporting produces thermal dissipation plots and thermal conductivity measurements within minutes
- VERIFICATION: Sample reference testing available in the field
