features

Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a technology used for acquiring qualitative and quantitative information about materials with broad applications in industries such as food processing, precision agriculture, and environmental monitoring.

HyperScan is ConeTec's solution for rapid oil sands tailings constituent analysis, providing measurements of:

  • Bitumen
  • Solids
  • Water
  • MBI
  • Total Fines
  • FFW

This technology uses hyperspectral reflectance data from tailings samples in visible, near infrared and shortwave infrared. HyperScan testing is performed in minutes and provides on site results. Lab-quality tailings constituent data, from the field, in real time.

advantages

  • Faster and less expensive compared to lab analysis.
  • Environmentally conscious, eliminating shipping GHGs and offsite plastic and soil waste.
  • Enables adaptive management of tailings pilots and site investigations.
  • Enables rapid, on-site analysis with immediate release of tailings characteristics.
  • HSI repeatability and reproducibility are higher than model errors, confirming reliability.
  • Supports machine learning calibration of tailings data to lab results.

applications

  • Used for in-situ, on-site, and off-site characterization of oil sands tailings.
  • Applicable to tailings materials included in the development dataset (excluding natural soils, oil sands ore, and petroleum coke).

specifications

  • Custom-designed mobile laboratory.
  • Solar-powered lab trailer equipped with battery reserves for zero-emission testing operations.
  • Machine Learning models developed using a paired dataset of hyperspectral and laboratory results are used to estimate the constituents.
